The cutest chief ever - Cruz Besouro!
Just look at this sweet thing I just bought!
The latest add to my collection, a brand new Team Chief, and how cute it is! This is one of my favourite models from all cars history. The Volkswagen Typ 1. Also known as The Bug or The Beetle. In Sweden we also call it The Bubble.
Born as early as in 1938 in Germany, this car was supposed to be a car for everyone, very much the same idea as the T-ford. A cheap simple car that anyone could afford.
The car came with a slogan "Power through joy" and it is easy to feel joy when you look at the lines of the car, the tiny and rounded shapes, it seems to beg you to just pick the whole thing up in your hand like a small kitten...
Cruz Besouro is the Team Chief of Carla Veloso, the Brazilian racer. And of course that is no coincidence, sence the Volkswagen Typ 1 was manufactured in Brazil. (When WV stoped to make the car in Germany 1978, it continued to manufacture the model in Brazil and Mexico).
2003 the last Beetle was made, in Mexico, and then shipped to Germany where it was placed in a museum. In 65 years, over 21 billion WV type 1, was produced and the car is a remarkable success.
Now it belongs in my garage (or MY museum!) - just look how perfect it matches the other racers and team chiefs:
Now I only need to get Otto Bonn (Mac Schnells team chief), Bruce Boxmann (Lewis Hamilton) and Brian Gearlooski (Rip Clutchgoneski). Yeah, this year Mattel eventually released a team chief for Rip - read more about him here.

More details about the tests
I kkow that some of you readers out there are in similar situation, with kids that experience different tyoes of difficulties. So for those of you it might be interesting with some details about the tests V did.
One is called Merrill-Palmer-Revised Scales of Development (MPR) and it is used to evaluate childrens level of development.
One of the parts of this test is called Color Matching and there V did great.
From the picture above you can tell that it hasn´t always been the case, but the last year, colors has been one of V´s strenghts. He has learned all the signs for our 7-10 most common colors and it is a important factor when V describes an object. It is a blue bus. A red car.
Then he did the Snijder OOmen Non-Verbal Intelligence Test (SON-R) and as a complement Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI-III).
Here V struggled a great deal. His age were estimated more of a 2,5 or a 3 year old kid. Patterns and puzzels where very hard for him to understand or copy.
Me and my wife also filled in a large number of pages in a test called Vineland-II where we estimated Vs abilities.
From the answers we could give it was clear that one area that V really performs well is "Abilities around home" And as you can see from these early pictures, this has been something that V has taken an interest in from an early stage.
All in all the psycologists recommend that V is given great support to start activities and to make the world around him easier to understand. Pictures is a good way to help him out and makes the day more predictable. He needs an adapt pedagogy and a clear support from an adult all the time.
This is thus one piece of information in the great enigma of our little son. Now 5 years and 1 months old. He speaks about 10 words (hello, mama, daddy, blue, boat, no, yes, bye bye) and signs some 30-50 different signs.

Thorough investigation makes it official: V is mentaly retarded
A couple of days ago we recieved a not surprisingly yet somewhat discouraging notice.
After being tested several times with at least four different test types the psycologists agreed to put the diagnosis "Non Specific Mental Retardation".
The Non Specific part is based on the fact that V made some really great achievements on some of the tests, and then other results that were, well not so good. He also only speaks some 10 words or so, that makes it difficult to judge his language abilties.
He really scored good on the parts called "helping out at home and know his way around the home". I´ve already written about the great fact that he can make his own smoothie. He knows how to find the different parts of the mixer, he put´s them together and he brings a banana, some youghurt, orange juice and frozen berry fruits from the freezer and mixes them together. All by himself.
On that part of one of the tests V actually scored points as of an average 5 year and 4 months child. A brilliant result since he´s only 5 years old. But that was also the only really good result. The rest indicated a boy around 3 or 4 years of age.
This is one of the tests where V struggled.

Patterns and numbers are hard for V. Colors are simple. But the psycologists suspects that he has problems with the perception of the eye. We havn´t been able to investigate his sight very deep, the doctors think his eyes work fine but there can be some problems with the information from the eyes to the brain. Some things might get lost in translation there.
So how did all this affect us as parents? Me, as a father?
Well. It was all in all quite predictable information. We knew about his strengths and his weaknesses. Now the question is - what´s the hen and what´s the egg? Is he good on colors because we play the same game every night where we collect "balloons" in different colors? Or is it because he is good on colors that he likes the game so much?
Is he good in the kitchen because we spend so much time there together, letting him try and be a part of the cooking? Or is it because he likes to bake and cook that he has made so much progress in that area?
And always when we get a test result with V that´s telling us about his disabilties, it is discouraging. It tells us in black on white that he is a boy with problems. He is not a normal kid. And that hurts of course. I mean, I know these things already, but when another doctor or psycologist again tells me about this, well you know... it is a reminder of something I sometimes let myself to forget.
Good things: V is now officially entitled to special school. And information about his conditions will now spread to his teachers in kindergarten and to people within the care system around him. The more information people around V gets about his mysterious undiagnosed condition - the better.
And, most importantly, V is the same great kid with the same great smile and tendereness as he were before the tests. Nothing has really changed in the fundamental part of being V. But we have gathered another small piece of information that helps us understanding this enigma of kid we have. And that is always a good thing.

Welcome Mach Matsou - I´ve made a special place for you in my... garage
Long time no cars. But this one I just had to get!
Mach Matsou - the japanese racecar Shu Todorokis Team Chief.
They make an excellent pair - speed and figure and the paint job makes the japanese colors look real fast! Mach Matsou is a modeled as a 1970 Nissan Fairlady Z.
Now I got the team chiefs of 6 of the race cars. 4 more are expected to reach relsease but for the missing 11th one, Rip Clutchgoneski´s chief, on one knows if we ever will see it as an diecast model.
I made a special place for the race cars and their team chiefs:
As you can see, I´ve put the Swedish racer "Flash" down at the bottom left corner as the "12th" official race car. That is clearly a violation against "canon" rules (as the five special edition cars doesn´t appear in the same movie - they appear in different movies depending on in which country the movie is shown) - but it is a nice tribute to Swedens racing legacy!

Memories of Thailand part II
Now he can swim at least 15 meters but he has to have the snorkel, he hasn´t found the "floating techinque" yet. But it is a remarkable change, until now, he has been a bit careful around water and has been almost terrified whenever he´s got water over his head.
But after four weeks in paradise A now jumps from the edge of the pool. Great!
And there it came! Number one!
A small step for mankind but a giant leap for our family!

Memories of Thailand Part I
One of the big peaks of the trip to Thailand was the Elephant Riding! On this picture you can´t really tell how big they are, but boy o`boy, they are truly huge!
Me and A went together on one of them and my wife and V sat together on another.
It was shaky and bumpy but fun. And afterwords we got to feed them with pineapple. V was thrilled and excited, giving things to that long trunk!
The sign for elephant was used a lot after that.
And so was the signs for monkey and banana after this incident. I had a bag and a banana, as we were walking past a couple of monkeys. Stupid idea.
I thought the banana would be protected since it was in plastic and not at the very top of the bag.
I was dead wrong.
The monkey made a quick jump, and hanging from the bag, it stuck a very long arm into it, grabbing the banana - in no time! And then back to the trees. Unfolding the plastic like a boss!
V was upset. It was his banana. But it was also a very exciting event so he understood that I could have done nothing to stop the little fellow. We agreed it was the monkeys fault.
We signed "The monkey stole V´s banana!" a lot after that. And we still do. A great memory!

It is a variant of John Lassetire the Team Chief
According to Pixar Wiki "John Lassetire is an all-American pick up truck. The truck he is most likely modeled after an early 1990s Chevrolet S-10 Pickup Truck."
There´s also a special edition where the car is wearing a "Hawaiian Shirt"painted on the back. That was given to all the people working on Cars 2.
But this one is also a Special Edition, it is from the same K-Mart Special that Muggsy Liftsome was in.
I love this one. Especially in this wiev, you see the similarity with the real John Lasseter - well. If you try real hard?
Anyway - have a really happy new year and let´s hope for som great cars 2014!

Unboxing Muggsy Liftsome
As I wrote a couple of days ago, I joined in on an ebay acution. And I won:
I do not usually care for the Deluxe-series. They are simply too big for my garage. But this one, I just got to have it! I do think that the Lemons are the most interesting cars from Cars 2. They are cars that havn´t been known for beauty, speed or perfection. Quite the contrary. They are misfits. Experiments. Cheap, and breaks a lot. The have a bad history. And I have been waiting for more of them. And this one, Muggsy Liftsome, is the first in a very long time:
Muggsy was released as a K-Mart Special in the US and there are still quite a few available on eBay.

The beauty of language
It is quite a revolution we take part in, the information highway people spoke of back in 1995 is really here and it is really vast.
For me porsonally, this gives me direct acess to the thoughts and feelings of another dad, living in the US with lots of similarities to my life. He also collects cars, hides them in a garage and he also has two sons, one of them with a disability.
I am very happy that this blog helped him find me and sharing things with him on email is an important way for me to deal with things around my son V. And my son A, as well.
So when I started to write in English, it was the right decision. This blog has always had more traffic from the US than from Sweden (Yes, even when I wrote in Swedish!) and since V has such a rare disease my hopes to get to know someone with something that looks a tiny bit similar to what he has, well the hope is bigger in the US, right?
My English isn´t very good, not all the time, I know that. And it makes me write a bit more selldom due to the larger effort it takes to first think, then translate, and then write.
But nevertheless this blog was a success for me when people emailed me from different parts of the world and told me something about their own children. Or their own car collections...
And I have always liked to read and write. I read my first word when I was 3 (according to my mom) and I read Roninson Crouse, the second edition, when I was about 8. Old difficult language. But what a freedom it was to be able to absorb all the stories out there!
And now. The irony. A son with so little language of his own. V knows a few words but almost all of them is a syllable in repeat: MA-MA. PA-PA. DI-DI, BA-BA (The last two is the names of two Babblare - toys made to help kids develop their speach)
But just the other day V took a giant leap. Well, to us it was.
We always read to V and A before they go to sleep. Lately he like to hear about "Mamma Mu och Kråkan" - that is somthing like "Mummy Moo and the Crow" a very funny series of books about the jolly Mummy Moo and the grumpy Crow. And then I tried with V.
- Say Mam-ma muuuu!
- Ma-mmma-mma
- Ma-Ma Muuu!
- Ma-Ma....Ma!
And then...
- Ma... Ma... Moooo!
Clearly two different words! Together. In a sentence!

November Blues for V
Last week I was filing a report. It was - as so many times before - a report about V and his disabilities. We are applying for some extra help. Assistance, you know.
V is quite a handfull. Sometimes it feels like I´m hurrying home from work just to start my next work. Get the kids from Daycare and School. Start cooking. Help V with his iPad (he loves watching Youtube-movies about trains, elevators and Teletubbies but Youtube laggs and buffers a lot and he simply hates that) finish cooking dinner. Feeding my kids, play som games with V, read some books, make the kids ready for bed and then read books before they go to sleep.
Some evenings my wife gets home early, and some evenings I work late. And I know, you are many out there, doing the same insane rituals. But believe me when I say that with a kid with a brain disability - it is a whole different ball game.
So we want help. Someone who can take V for some hours on a sunday. To go play outside, to the park, or just a ride with the bus (he really loves that).
It would be nice for me and my wife, we could relax, breath, recover a bit. But it would also benefit A a lot. We could care for him more, play with him without being interrupted every third minute by a scream or so. If you read my ramblings about the insane ritual above, you notice that I haven´t even mentioned A. That´s because he pretty much take care of himself. He is forced to do that.
So when I was filling in the application form the other night, making sure to put everything that V needs extra help with on paper, it all struck me as very sad.
"V has no friends of his own"
"V needs help and being looked after all the time"
"V har motoric difficulities"
"Although being 4,5 years old, V does not speak more words than dad and mom".
I cried.
Sometimes everything just hit you. And overwhelmes you. And you feel very very small. And that someone has treated you in a extremely unfair way.
But then I dried my tears. Tried to think about about all the good stuff V brought in our life.
And filled in the rest of the God damned application.

Finally some cars I really want!
It is dark now. Both here in Sweden, where the November darkness keeps us under it´s thick blankett. - This month is actually the darkest one since most of Sweden still has no snow.
But the darkness also keeps a tight grip on the Mattel Diecast Cars right now. It has been really a long time since any interesting cars has been released.

Another Disney Pixar diecast car I did not really need (but somehow bought anyway) - Maurice
A car found in another country on a small toy store is a bargain whatever the price, it is almost like an adventure to go abroad to collect cars! So who cares Maurice is a car in a theme that I do not care for (Palace Chaos) and who cares I do not know anything about the car or the character. It was a new car that I did not already have and it was in Amsterdam, Holland, and it was only 10 Euro! Well only... it WAS 10 Euro...

Mama Topolino - looks not at all like Susie the Little Blue Coupe
First I thought that Mama Topolino was another way Pixar made a small tribute to great works before.
Like they did when Lightning McQueen got the number 95 because the first Pixar Movie, Toy Story, was released 1995. And like they did with all the great racers like the King (same number and car as Richard Petty). And tons of other references that fills the films.
So when I got a close look in this nice diecast, I was pretty sure I´ve seen it before.
The car may resemble a 1963 Renault Dauphine but I thought it was a tribute to the old Disney Car Susie The Little Blue Coupe.
Susie is important for the Cars movie. Originally Susie become famous starring a 8 minutes Disney short film back in 1952. But according to the wikipedia page of Cars, Susie was the inspiration with a capital I:
"From the very beginning of this project, John Lasseter had it in his mind to have the eyes be in the windshield. For one thing, it separates our characters from the more common approach where you have little cartoon eyes in the headlights. For another, he thought that having the eyes down near the mouth at the front end of the car feels more like a snake. With the eyes set in the windshield, the point of view is more human-like, and made it feel like the whole car could be involved in the animation of the character."
But Mama Topolino was no look-a-like to Susie.
So no tribute there. But reading some more about the car I found out that:

Brent Mustangburger - New Diecast! And another one...

The car is a 1977 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and the flames are irresistable.
According to the Pixar Wika-page "Darrell is based on the real life NASCAR Champion driver Darrell Waltrip, who currently works as a television race commentator for Fox Broadcasting and Speed TV."
He also has a catch phrase in the movies: "Boogity, Boogity, Boogity! Let's go racing boys!"
Does anyone know if Darrell Waltrip uses the same in real life?
The main reason I bought this 2 pack was not because of Darrel Cartrip, I already got that one. But when you look at the one I got and this new one you could understand why I still consider myself a bit more happy with the new Darrell:
The mouth is a legendary bad job in the Disney Pixar Diecast-scene. So no more Clown Cartrip for me!
As for the other car, Brent Mustangburger (what a bad name that is!) - he is a real shiny and fresh looking fellow!
- Brent is based on, voiced by and named after ESPN/ABC sportscaster Brent Musburger.
- Brent Mustangburger is a reporter for the RSN (Racing Sports Network), which appeared prominently in Cars.
- Brent is a 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe.
- His licence plate is BWM539. It represents the initials and the birthday (May 1939) of his voice actor, Brent Woody Musburger.
- The die-cast model of Brent has brown eyes, although Brent Mustangburger himself has green eyes.
Yes of course I mean the last one. GREEN eyes! O boy! No wonder they changed it to brown. Green Eyes...
